Perth Glory defender Chris Coyne will be the club’s first Socceroo to leave during the January transfer window seeking to boost his national team selection chances for this year’s World Cup.

Coyne, who will suit up for the Glory against Sydney FC at ME Bank stadium on Sunday afternoon, is expected to hope straight on a plane for China to join Super League club Shandong Luneng.

He will undertake fitness and training tests throughout next week in an effort to secure a loan deal by January 31.

The Glory’s national players in Coyne, striker Mile Sterjovski and club captain Jacob Burns will all be seeking short loan stints overseas in an effort to play against higher quality teams and convince national team coach Pim Verbeek they are worthy of taking to South Africa for the June World Cup tournament.

Should they be successful, Perth would then be without their three biggest names for the final two games of the season and the finals.

Coyne is expected to return to Perth next week after completing his trial duties with Shandong Luneng although it is unclear whether he will miss the club’s game against Melbourne next Saturday.
