Mitchell Touts McBreen For Internationals
Monday 1st February 2010
Perth Glory Coach Dave Mitchell believes temporary signing Danny McBreen has what it takes to succeed on the world stage.
Since arriving from North Queensland just over two weeks ago, McBreen has played the lead role in stabilising Glory’s season with four classy goals, lifting the side to fourth place on the ladder.
His most recent efforts, a crucial brace in a 3-1 win over Central Coast at the weekend, has all but guaranteed the WA club of a maiden finals berth.
Mitchell says he will be recommending the 32-year-old to national selectors, ahead of the World Cup later this year.
‘Based on the performances he's had since being here we would be certainly recommending him to (Socceroos coach) Pim Verbeek as a target man,’ Mitchell said.
‘He's unselfish, works hard, holds the ball up well and scores goals,
'As a big target man for the national team, I'd give him a big tick for sure.’
In an ironic twist, McBreen, who's on loan from North Queensland until the end of the 2009/10 campaign, has already signed to play with the Mariners next season.
His two goals inside the first 11 minutes against his side-to-be has killed off the Central Coast’s finals chances and therefore, among other things, a place in the lucrative AFC Champions League.
In that respect, McBreen’s dominant showing will be bitter-sweet for Mariners’ boss Lawrie McKinna.
‘If Daniel had not put in at 100 percent effort I would have been disappointed in the boy,’ McKinna said after his side was officially knocked-out of finals contention for the first time in A-League history.
‘The reason we signed him has been for his good work and to me that's pleasing that he's worked out.’
‘Obviously disappointed that he scored two crucial goals but he went out with that effort and professionalism and we know what to expect when he comes here next year.'
